5 Dogs That Can Be Hyper & How To Help That

how to help hyper dog

Dogs have a lot of energy almost across the board, but there are some types of dogs that can be hyper when compared to others. We love our dogs and would do whatever we could to spend as much time with them as possible, but we also work, have other members in our families, and a lot of things to do on any given day. Unfortunately, that means that oftentimes, our dogs are bumped down on the priority list, which can have its own set of consequences later that day or even a few days down the road. If there was one special formula that kept all dogs physically satisfied, that’s how we’d all handle things, but there isn’t, so we need to simply do our best to make things right for our furry friends.

KONG has been working with dog owners for nearly 50 years, and during that time we’ve heard a lot of stories about dogs that are extremely high-energy. Our products are specifically designed to provide fun for pooches, which usually means that they’re expending that energy and finding themselves physically spent at the end of the day. Below we’d like to offer examples of 5 dogs that can be hyper and beyond that, provide some ideas for how to help with that situation.

5 Dogs That Can Be Hyper

While there is no objective set of criteria to measure just how “hyper” one breed is when compared to another, there are generalities that can be put to use. While you may not see the exact same list from others who put together their own list of 5 dogs that can be hyper, chances are you’ll find some commonalities in each of them. As such, below are dogs that are known worldwide to be extremely high in energy, in no particular order:

  1. German Shepherd
  2. Irish Setter
  3. Dalmatian
  4. Poodle
  5. Husky

There are other breeds that deserve “honorable mention” on this list of 5 dogs that can be hyper, but those above represent a list that most people would agree on in terms of the respective energy levels of those breeds.

Build a Strict Routine

There are a lot of different reasons that a dog can be hyper in general. One of them is that they’re acting out because they’re bored or they’re not sure what’s going to happen next. Dogs are definitely creatures of habit much like humans, and when they’re not sure what their day is going to entail, they’re going to respond to that. The best way to deal with this potential problem is to completely eliminate it by building a strong and consistent routine, whatever that is. If you want to give your buddy a walk before work and then another after, feeding it twice per day, then do that every day. You should try to do that on weekends as well. If a dog knows what the day will involve, it will be more relaxed and reassured.

Don’t Scrimp On the Exercise

Another obvious reason that dogs can be hyper is that they have too much energy stored up, and they need to blow off some steam. The breeds mentioned above are especially high-energy, but most dogs have a lot of fuel in their tanks to burn on a daily basis. You need to provide an outlet for that so that they can feel physically satisfied at the end of the day. Larger, highly energetic dogs can require up to two hours of exercise every day, whether that’s hiking, playing, or doing something else. If you don’t provide it for them, they’re going to find ways to expend that energy. Often times, that’s not a good thing at all for you, your home, or your dog, so learn to build this into your day one way or another.

Put Together a Solid Diet

We are what we eat, as they say, and that’s certainly true with dogs as well a with humans. One of the more overlooked reasons that dogs can be hyper is because they’re not eating a healthy and balanced diet. If you’re having problems with hyperactivity, take a look at the ingredients in your dog’s food. If it contains a lot of byproducts, low-quality grains such as corn or wheat that are basically filler, and perhaps even chemical coloring agents, it could be contributing to the issue. It may cost a bit more, but you should consider switching to dog food with fewer ingredients that are more natural, especially things like organic meats and green vegetables.

Spend Time With Your Dog

Finally, you should always make sure that your dog does not feel neglected or overlooked. One of the biggest reasons that dogs can be hyper is because they’re acting out for attention. While we all love our dogs, our lives can also be overwhelmed and inundated with things like long working hours, schedule demands for our children, and the like. Many of us have sat down at 9 or 10 p.m. only to realize just then that, once again, the family dog got no attention that day other than being fed. That’s going to lead to problems in most situations. If you don’t come by it naturally, then start scheduling yourself in with a “task” of playing with and perhaps cuddling with your dog for as little as 15 minutes per day. If that hasn’t been happening, you may find that taking this step can make an enormous difference in the overall vibe in your home as experienced by your dog.

Of course, if playtime is something you need help with, you’ve come to the right place. KONG Club has plenty of options for you in the app. Go ahead and take a look at what we have to offer, and you’ll probably find things that your dog will find fun even when no one else is around. We wish you the best on calming your buddy down and rest assured that with time and some effort, that will happen.
